A project with Event Communications
The Roman Baths Museum sits at the heart of the city of Bath which is designated a World Heritage Site. The Roman Baths and adjacent Georgian Pump Rooms are also listed as Scheduled Monuments, the highest classification given by English Heritage. The Roman Baths are a key part of the city's tourist offer and Bath Council wished to keep the museum open throughout the duration of the much needed renovation work. The project was completed in yearly phases meaning disruption could be kept to a minimum.
Daniel joined Event Communications as a Senior Designer specifically to lead on the Roman Baths project. Along with new exhibition showcase displays, significant architectural interventions were executed such as creating new flow routes through the building, introducing glass floors to reveal Roman archaeology, creating an ‘amphitheatre’ style seating area in front of the Temple Pediment projection show, opening up new vistas to expose the original Roman building and improving the vertical access by introducing new stairs and platform lifts. Challenges were working within the constraints of the listed Georgian building, dealing with earlier 20th Century interventions and accommodating unexpected Roman archaeology as walls and floors were removed.
Within the museum the Roman people of the baths are bought to life by soundscapes and figures projected directly onto the walls of the building. The exhibition comprises of new artefact displays, replica touch objects and physical interactives which make this a very sensory experience, culminating in visitors arriving at the hot, steaming waters of the Roman Baths itself.
